First things first, fibrosis is the result of the inflammatory process after injury to any part of the body. Surgery is a form of injury and therefore the inflammatory reaction after surgery is not avoidable, but can be reduced using certain measures.
After rhinoplasty, our immune system reacts with inflammation, which is a sign of health. This inflammation causes swelling. This is why nasal splints and tapes are used after rhinoplasty to minimize this swelling. Eventually, the swelling can transform to fibrosis, which is hard tissue that can mask the underlying results of the rhinoplasty and sometimes cause a deformity.
If fibrosis occur, manual massages can help break it, however, if it is extensive or resistant to massage, injections of steroids can dissolve it. This should be done cautiously by an experienced surgeon since it is not risk free; Steroids can weaken the cartilage and thin the skin.
The best treatment for fibrosis is prevention: Use nasal taping for at least 2 weeks after the surgery, and visit your surgeon regularly for gentle massage of the nose.
