Over the last two decades, liposuction has evolved from a procedure to simply remove excess fat to the state of the art techniques to precisely sculpt the body to the finest details.
This significant evolution is due to the advancements in technologies and techniques, surgeons experience, and high-quality scientific studies.
To make it brief, the three main classes of liposuction are the following:
Through this procedure, fat can be removed from one or more areas in the body to decrease the fullness and improve the contour. Generally, all technologies can be used for this end.
Liposculpture is the procedure through which fat is removed from certain areas and added to other areas in order to create aesthetic contours. The most common areas where fat added to are the buttocks and the breast.
In addition to creating an elegant body contour, through high definition liposculpture plastic surgeons sculpt the superficial fat layer in order to reveal, and sometimes augment the underlying muscles and anatomic structures. This is advanced liposuction that should only be performed by a qualified, well trained and experienced plastic surgeon.
Having discussed the above main categories of liposuction, it is important to know that there are different types of technologies. Some of them function through mechanical energy by gently breaking the fat tissue, others emit thermal energy (ultrasound, LASER, radiofrequency, etc…) to melt the fat before aspiration.
Also, the post-operative recovery has evolved. Currently we ask our patients at IMAGN Institute to wear a garment for a total of three week and return to exercising after that period. In the first few days, pain is well controlled by oral pain medications, and patients should do sessions of lymphatic drainage massage after the procedure.
