The nasal septum is a mostly cartilaginous wall that divides the nasal cavity into right and left airways. Deformity in the septum, such as deviation, can cause obstruction in one or both sides of the nose. The term septoplasty refers to the reconstruction of the deformed septum to make it straight and complete.
Rhinoplasty is the term used to refer to plastic surgery performed on the nose. The objective of rhinoplasty can be improvement in nasal aesthetics, function or both. Through rhinoplasty, the plastic surgeon operates on the nasal cartilages, bones and skin envelope.
In our practice, septoplasty is almost always combined with rhinoplasty to optimize both aesthetic and functional outcomes. Hence the term septorhinoplasty.
